Service to the
legal profession
Philip
M. North, Q.C. is an inspirational role model
to the members of the legal profession and to
the other members of our community. Since being
called to the Bar in June of 1972, Mr. North has
volunteered extensively within the legal profession
and the community demonstrating an immeasurable
commitment and dedication, and distinguishing
himself by doing a large number of remarkable
tasks. The Distinguished Service Award for Service
to the Legal Profession is presented to Mr. North
in recognition of his multifaceted contributions
to the legal profession in Alberta.
During
his tenure as a bencher of the Law Society of
Alberta from 1986 to 1992, Mr. North served on
numerous committees, contributing to the regulation
and governance of the legal profession in Alberta.
As a bencher and committee member, he served confidently,
vigorously and skillfully. He served as a non
bencher member for the Conduct Committee until
February 1993, and has been a volunteer practice
reviewer since 1993. In addition, he was an extremely
important member of the Society's Interprovincial
Law Firm Committee from 1991 to 1995.
From
1988 to 1992 Mr. North chaired the Alberta Law
Foundation, demonstrating leadership, patience
and wisdom during a growth period when difficult
decisions had to be made and foresight was required.
Financial and funding decisions made under his
leadership paid huge dividends over the years
and contributed to the preservation of the Alberta
Law Foundation.
Mr.
North was a director for the Legal Education Society
of Alberta from 1992 to 1998, serving as chair
from 1994 to 1996. Again, during a period of significant
growth and challenges for the Legal Education
Society of Alberta, Mr. North provided strong
leadership and vision. Mr. North is also an active
member of the Lethbridge Bar Association serving
as president in 1991.
Mr.
North also extends his efforts beyond the legal
sphere by volunteering extensively within Lethbridge.
His volunteer commitments include: The University
for Lethbridge; The Lethbridge Community Foundation;
The Lethbridge Downtown Rotary; The Lethbridge
Chamber of Commerce; The Lethbridge Community
College Business Advisory Committee; The Lethbridge
Minor Hockey Association; The Lethbridge Easter
Seal Telethon; Lethbridge Old Timer Hockey; and
the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise,
Lethbridge Chapter.
A
founding partner in Lethbridge law firm, North
& Company, Mr. North graduated from the
University of Manitoba with his LL.B. after earning
his B.Sc. from Brandon University.
